One Afternoon, Then a Year of Telling People About It

Ask someone about their first full mushroom day and listen to what they talk about. It’s rarely the colours. It’s what happened after. The call they finally made to their dad. The job they stopped pretending to like. The walk they now take every morning without a phone in their pocket.

That’s the part of macrodosing nobody puts on a poster. The day itself lasts about six hours. What people bring home from it lasts a lot longer, and researchers have spent twenty years putting numbers on exactly that.

A year later, most people still rank it near the top of their life

In 2006, Johns Hopkins gave 36 healthy adults a full dose of psilocybin in a calm living room with a guide, then kept checking in on them (Griffiths et al., 2006). More than a year later, 58% still placed that one afternoon among the five most meaningful experiences of their lives. Four of the 36 called it the single most meaningful thing that had ever happened to them (Griffiths et al., 2008).

Think about what that list usually holds. A wedding. A first kid. Losing a parent. A few hours on a couch with eyeshades and a playlist made the cut for more than half the room.

What shifts is what people care about

The most careful look at this landed in 2026. Researchers gave 89 healthy adults either psilocybin or a true placebo, with nobody in the room knowing who got which (Kerr-Gaffney et al., 2026). Personality scores didn’t budge. Personal values did. The psilocybin groups reported bigger changes in what they valued than the placebo group, a week later and again three months on.

The researchers also found what predicted it. The more someone felt the edges between themselves and everything else soften during the session, the more their values moved afterward. What people felt on the day is what tracked with the change after.

People describe it in plainer words. Less chasing. More time on the stuff they always said mattered. The study is small and self-reported, so its authors want it repeated in a bigger group. It’s still the best-designed answer to this question so far.

People come home more connected, mostly to the world around them

Imperial College researchers built a scale to measure three kinds of connection. To yourself, to other people, and to the world. Then 1,226 people filled it out before and after a planned psychedelic experience (Watts et al., 2022). All three went up. The biggest change was connection to the world, then to other people, then to self.

Ask what that looks like on a Monday and the answers are small. Noticing the sky on the drive to work. Taking the long way home through the park. Texting a friend they haven’t spoken to in three years. Small things, repeated, are how a week actually changes.

Most people go for fun. They come back with something anyway.

The broadest survey of American mushroom users asked people why they took a full dose (NSIHT, 2024). Fun led at 68%. Curiosity came second at 46%. Personal growth was third at 39%.

We love that. Nobody needs a grand mission statement to have a mushroom day. Plenty of people head in for a good time with friends and come out the other side looking at their own life from a little higher up. The meaning tends to show up whether it was invited or not.

The day opens the door. The weeks after walk through it.

The research is clear on one more thing, and it’s the most useful part. People who volunteer for psilocybin studies are unusually open before they take anything. In that 2026 trial, volunteers scored 34.4 on openness against a population average of 26.5. And a 2026 re-analysis of two large surveys found that much of the wellbeing link people credit to psychedelics travels with meditation, which a lot of the same people also practise (Krabbe, Sikka and Jylkkä, 2026).

Here’s how we read it. The best stories we hear come from people who built something around the day. A notebook. A morning walk. The conversation they promised themselves they’d have, and then had. The day is the view. What they do with it on Wednesday is theirs.

How people set up a day worth remembering

  • Clear the whole day and the next morning. No work email, no school pickup, no dinner reservation.
  • Pick the room and the people. One trusted, sober friend in the house beats a crowd every time.
  • Know your dose. Our Macro capsules hold 450mg each. One to two capsules lets you feel out your tolerance. Three to five is a full experience.
  • Eat light and start in the early afternoon so the comedown lands well before bed. Each capsule has ginger root built in for a calmer stomach.
  • Write it down. A line before about what you want to look at. A page within two days about what you saw.
  • Skip it if you take lithium, or if you or a close family member has a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder.
