What Macrodosing Actually Feels Like (and Why People Reach for a Full Dose)

Lifetime psilocybin use among American adults climbed from 10% in 2019 to 12.1% in 2023. That is roughly 31 million people who have now tried it (Rockhill et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2025). Most of them started small.

Microdosing gets the headlines and the productivity podcasts. But a quietly growing number of people are curious about the other end of the dial: the full, you-will-definitely-feel-this dose. So what does macrodosing actually feel like, and why are people across Canada and the US choosing to go there? Let’s talk about it like adults.

The short version

  • A macrodose is a full, clearly perceptible dose of psilocybin. It is the opposite of a subtle microdose.
  • Expect 4 to 6 hours of shifted senses, big emotions, and, for some people, a genuinely meaningful experience. In one Johns Hopkins study, 67% rated it among the five most meaningful experiences of their lives (Griffiths et al., 2006).
  • People mostly reach for it for mental health relief, self-insight, spiritual connection, personal growth, and meaning during heavy seasons.
  • The placebo effect is powerful here, so honesty, set, and setting matter more than hype.

So, what is macrodosing?

Macrodosing means taking a dose big enough that you clearly feel it. Not a faint lift, but a full psychedelic experience. Where a microdose sits around a tenth of a recreational amount and is meant to slip under your radar, a macrodose is the real thing, lights on.

It is also more common than people assume. In the largest survey of its kind, RAND found that among past-year psilocybin users, only 47% microdosed the last time they used (RAND, 2024). The majority took a perceptible, macro-range dose. So if macrodosing feels like the fringe option, the data politely disagrees.

A macrodose is a decision, not an impulse. Most people who do it plan for it.

The intensity tracks the dose. Johns Hopkins researchers mapped this directly, showing that the acute and lasting effects of psilocybin rise as a steady function of dose (Griffiths et al., 2011). More milligrams, more experience. That is the whole idea behind a dosing ladder, and it is why macrodosing and microdosing are genuinely different practices, not the same thing at two volumes.

For reference, our Macro capsules are formulated at 450mg, the full-dose end of our lineup. That is a meaningful step up from a 125mg Clarity dose, and it should be treated like one.

What does a macrodose actually feel like?

A macrodose feels like the volume getting turned up on everything at once: vision, emotion, thought, and time. Colors breathe, ideas connect in unexpected ways, and feelings you have been sitting on tend to surface whether you scheduled them or not. The intensity peaks for a few hours, then eases. Researchers measure this experience with a validated tool called the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (Barrett et al., 2015).

A woman with eyes closed in a sunlit field, a calm introspective moment
The peak is less about hallucinations and more about feeling things fully.

The arc is fairly predictable. The come-up lands somewhere around 20 to 40 minutes in, a little nervous, a little giddy. The peak arrives over the next hour or two: visual movement, time stretching like taffy, and what scientists call ego dissolution, the loosening of the usual boundary between you and everything else. Then it softens into a mellow, reflective comedown and an afterglow that many describe as feeling rinsed clean.

It is not all bliss. Some of the most valuable moments are the uncomfortable ones. A study of 379 people pinpointed a distinct part of the experience called emotional breakthrough, where something heavy finally moves, and found it predicted better outcomes afterward (Roseman et al., 2019). Anecdotally, plenty of people report a rough hour in the middle that turns out to be the whole point. Ever cried at something you did not even know was bothering you? It can feel like that, dialed up.

In Michael Pollan’s first-person account in How to Change Your Mind, he describes his own sense of self scattering “like a sheaf of papers in a windstorm.” That is the kind of language people reach for. Words run out, which is part of why a macrodose is so hard to explain to anyone who has not had one.

Top 5 reasons people macrodose in Canada and the USA

There is no tidy survey that ranks exactly why people take a full dose, so we built this list from the strongest evidence plus the single most common stated reason. In the largest naturalistic survey to date, “self-exploration” was the number one purpose people gave, at an average dose of 3.1 grams of dried mushrooms, which is squarely macro territory (Nayak et al., 2023).

Connection is a recurring theme. A lot of people do this with people they trust.

1. To work through depression and anxiety

This is the headline use, and the trial data is genuinely striking. In a Johns Hopkins study of cancer patients facing real distress, a single high dose produced clinically significant drops in depression and anxiety in about 80% of participants, still holding at six months (Griffiths et al., 2016). Two doses of psilocybin even held their own against six weeks of a daily SSRI in a head-to-head trial (Carhart-Harris et al., NEJM, 2021). Worth repeating: those were supervised clinical settings, not a Tuesday night at home.

2. For self-exploration and insight

This is the reason most people actually name first. A macrodose has a way of showing you your own patterns from the outside, like reading your diary in someone else’s handwriting. The same naturalistic survey that ranked self-exploration at the top also linked use to lasting drops in anxiety, depression, and alcohol misuse (Nayak et al., 2023).

3. For spiritual connection and the mystical experience

Some people are chasing meaning, not symptom relief. In the foundational Hopkins study, 61% of participants met the criteria for a “complete” mystical experience on a high dose, compared with 11% on a stimulant comparison (Griffiths et al., 2006). Awe, unity, a sense that everything is quietly connected. You do not have to be religious to be floored by it.

4. For lasting openness and personal growth

Here is the one that surprises scientists. A single high-dose session produced a measurable, lasting increase in the personality trait of Openness, still present more than a year later (MacLean et al., 2011). Adult personality is supposed to be basically set. This nudged it. People often describe coming back a little more curious and a little less rigid.

5. For meaning during the hardest seasons

Grief, a diagnosis, the end of something. A parallel NYU trial in patients with life-threatening cancer found rapid, sustained reductions in anxiety and depression, alongside better spiritual wellbeing and quality of life (Ross et al., 2016). When life narrows to something brutal, a lot of people use a macrodose to look at it squarely.

Is macrodosing legal in Canada and the USA?

Mostly no, with a few important exceptions, and the map is changing fast. Psilocybin remains a controlled substance federally in both countries, so this is the part where we say clearly: none of this is legal advice, and you are responsible for knowing your local rules.

In Canada, psilocybin is illegal to possess or sell, but legal access exists through Health Canada’s Special Access Program and Section 56 exemptions, mostly for clinical and end-of-life cases. In the US, it is still Schedule I federally, yet the states have been busy. Oregon opened the first licensed, supervised psilocybin service centers in 2023 under Measure 109, and Colorado decriminalized personal use and launched regulated healing centers under Proposition 122. Dozens of cities, starting with Denver in 2019, have also deprioritized enforcement. The direction of travel is pretty obvious.

The honest part nobody puts on a label

The placebo effect in this space is enormous, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. In the largest placebo-controlled psychedelic study at the time, 191 microdosers improved on mood and wellbeing, but so did the placebo group, by basically the same amount (Szigeti et al., eLife, 2021). That study was on microdosing, but the lesson carries: expectation is a powerful drug on its own. It is exactly why the supervised macrodose trials above use blinding, and why your mindset going in shapes a lot of what comes out.

Set and setting are not woo. They are most of the experience.

It is also not for everyone. In that big naturalistic survey, 7 to 11% of people reported persisting negative effects (Nayak et al., 2023). A macrodose can dredge up anxiety, and a difficult passage is part of the deal. None of this is a substitute for medical care.

Please skip a macrodose if any of this applies to you. A personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, certain heart conditions, or medications like lithium and tramadol. Never drive, never dose alone the first time, and talk to a doctor if you take prescriptions. Psilocybin is not an approved treatment for any condition, and a meaningful experience is not the same as a cure.

How to approach a macrodose with intention

The people who have the best experiences treat it like an event, not an errand. Clear the calendar for the whole day. Pick a setting you trust, ideally with a sober friend nearby. Set an intention, then let go of it. And start lower than your ego wants to, because you can always go bigger next time, but you cannot go smaller once it is in you.

If you are newer to this, climb the ladder. A 30mg Mini or a 125mg Clarity dose teaches you how your body responds. A 300mg Wavy dose is a noticeable middle gear. Then a full 450mg Macro dose is the deep end, once you actually know how to swim. Not sure where you sit? Our two-minute quiz points you to a starting place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between microdosing and macrodosing?

A microdose is subtle, around a tenth of a recreational amount, a gentle lift rather than a trip. A macrodose is a full, clearly felt psychedelic experience. RAND found 47% of past-year users microdosed last time, so the rest took perceptible doses (RAND, 2024).

How long does a psilocybin macrodose last?

Usually 4 to 6 hours from come-up to comedown, with the peak in the first couple of hours. Many people also report a gentle afterglow into the next day. Hopkins research found the acute effects scale steadily with dose (Griffiths et al., 2011), so a bigger dose generally means a longer, deeper arc.

Is macrodosing safe?

Psilocybin has a low toxicity profile, but a macrodose carries real psychological risk and is not for everyone. Up to 11% of users report persisting negative effects (Nayak et al., 2023). Avoid it with a history of psychosis, certain heart conditions, or interacting medications, and never dose and drive.

How big is a macrodose compared to a microdose?

It is roughly an order of magnitude larger. Naturalistic macrodose use averages about 3.1 grams of dried mushrooms (Nayak et al., 2023), while a microdose is a small fraction of that. Our Macro capsules sit at the full-dose end at 450mg.

The bottom line

Macrodosing is not microdosing’s louder cousin. It is a different practice with a different goal: depth instead of subtlety. The research points to real, sometimes lasting effects on mood, openness, and meaning, and millions of people are clearly curious. It also demands respect, honesty about the placebo effect, and a plan. If you do go there, go on purpose.
