One woman, one dose, and weeks of speech nobody expected
What they did
Clinicians documented an octogenarian woman with roughly ten years of progressive Alzheimer's, five of them with largely monosyllabic speech, who was given five grams of dried psilocybin-containing mushrooms, followed by a smaller session a month later.
What they found
Over the following weeks she showed improvements in continence, mobility, memory and speech. The authors describe this as residual function becoming briefly accessible rather than any reversal of the disease.
Worth knowing
This is a single uncontrolled case report, which is the weakest form of clinical evidence there is. It cannot show that psilocybin caused the change, it has not been replicated, and the authors are explicit that this is not disease reversal. It is on this page because it is a genuine and remarkable observation, not because it is proof of anything.
