What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Eighty-two smokers were randomly assigned to a single high dose of psilocybin or to the nicotine patch, with both groups receiving the same cognitive behavioural therapy programme, then followed for six months with biologically verified abstinence.

What they found

At six months, 17 of 42 people in the psilocybin group had stayed smoke-free, or 40.5 percent, against 4 of 40 on the patch, or 10 percent.

Worth knowing

Described by its authors as a pilot, and 82 people is small for a smoking cessation trial. Both groups received intensive therapy on top of their assigned treatment, so this compares two additions to therapy rather than psilocybin against nothing.
