What they did

Researchers analysed responses from 214,505 US adults in national survey data from 2015 to 2019, testing whether lifetime use of each classic psychedelic tracked with opioid use disorder.

What they found

Psilocybin was the only substance associated with lower odds of past-year opioid use disorder, at roughly 30 percent lower odds. Peyote, mescaline and LSD showed no comparable association.

Worth knowing

Cross-sectional survey data showing an association, not a trial and not causal. People who have used psilocybin differ from those who have not in ways no survey adjustment fully removes. It does replicate an earlier finding, which is worth something.
