What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Adults with alcohol use disorder were randomly assigned to two doses of psilocybin or an active placebo, each combined with twelve weeks of psychotherapy, and followed for thirty-two weeks.

What they found

Heavy drinking days averaged 9.7 percent in the psilocybin group against 23.6 percent on placebo, a gap of 13.9 percentage points. No serious adverse events were reported.

Worth knowing

Diphenhydramine was used as the active placebo and does not feel like psilocybin, so blinding was likely imperfect. Everyone in both groups also received twelve weeks of therapy, which does a lot of work.
