Five people with fibromyalgia, and pain that eased at a month

Large effect sizes, and a sample far too small to trust them.

What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Five adults with fibromyalgia received two psilocybin doses two weeks apart together with six psychotherapy sessions, with safety as the primary outcome.

What they found

Blood pressure and heart rate rose temporarily during dosing and normalised by the end of treatment, with no serious adverse events. A month later the group showed large reductions in pain severity and sleep disturbance.

Worth knowing

Five people is far too few to establish anything about efficacy, and large effect sizes in samples this small are expected rather than impressive. Included as a marker that the work has started, not that it has arrived.
