Ten women with anorexia, and psilocybin looked safe to give
What they did
Ten adult women with anorexia nervosa or partial remission received a single 25mg dose of synthetic psilocybin alongside psychological support, with safety and tolerability as the primary aim.
What they found
No clinically significant changes in heart tracing, vital signs or suicidality occurred, and all adverse events were mild and short-lived. Two of ten participants showed symptomless low blood sugar that resolved within a day.
Worth knowing
This study establishes that the research can be done safely. It was not designed to show anorexia improves and it does not show that. Low blood sugar in an underweight population is a real signal to watch.
