Twelve of fifteen smokers quit and stayed quit
What they did
Fifteen long-term smokers at Johns Hopkins, averaging thirty-one years of smoking and six previous quit attempts, received moderate and high doses of psilocybin inside a fifteen week cognitive behavioural quit programme.
What they found
Biologically confirmed abstinence at six months was reached by twelve of fifteen participants, or 80 percent, against the rates below 35 percent typically seen with standard treatments.
Worth knowing
Fifteen people, open-label, no control group, and a highly motivated self-selected sample wrapped in an intensive therapy programme. The 80 percent figure travels far further than the evidence behind it.
