One dose after detox did not beat placebo for drinking

One dose after detox was not enough, and the paper says so.

What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Swiss researchers gave thirty-seven people who had just completed alcohol withdrawal treatment either a single 25mg psilocybin dose or placebo, each with about five psychotherapy sessions, then tracked relapse over four weeks.

What they found

Abstinence duration did not differ significantly, at 16.8 days with psilocybin against 13.8 days on placebo. Craving, depression and quality of life did improve more in the psilocybin group.

16.8 vs 13.8days abstinent, not significant

Worth knowing

A null result on the primary outcome, included here deliberately. It suggests a single dose plus brief therapy is not enough for severe cases, which is useful information the positive trials do not give you.
