Two sessions, and most participants halved their depression
What they did
Twenty-seven adults with major depressive disorder were randomly assigned to receive two psilocybin sessions with supportive therapy either immediately or after an eight week delay.
What they found
Depression scores fell steeply in the treated group, with 71 percent showing at least a 50 percent reduction in symptoms at both one week and four weeks after treatment.
Worth knowing
A waiting list is not a placebo. People who know they are being treated while others wait tend to improve more, and this design cannot separate that from the drug. Small sample, mostly white participants, four week window.
