What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Researchers pooled raw data from eight double-blind placebo-controlled studies in which 110 healthy volunteers took oral psilocybin across a wide dose range.

What they found

Effects were dose-dependent and most participants rated the experience as pleasurable. Dysphoria and anxiety occurred in a minority and only at the highest doses, resolving with interpersonal support. Follow-up found no cases of substance abuse, prolonged psychosis or persisting perceptual disturbance.

Worth knowing

Healthy screened volunteers in supervised laboratory settings with support available. That is close to the best possible conditions and not a guide to what happens outside them.

The headline finding worth carrying around is that risk concentrates in people with existing psychiatric conditions and in unsupervised settings. If either applies to you, talk to a doctor before you start anything.
