What our evidence ratings mean

What they did

Thirty healthy volunteers received intravenous psilocybin or placebo while blood flow and activity across the brain were measured with two different MRI methods.

What they found

Activity decreased rather than increased, with the largest drops in hub regions such as the medial prefrontal and cingulate cortex. The size of the decrease predicted how intense the subjective experience was.

Worth knowing

Intravenous dosing produces a much sharper onset than anything taken orally, so this describes a somewhat different experience from a swallowed dose.

Read the source

This is where the word neuroplasticity comes from in psilocybin marketing. Worth reading the actual studies, because most of them were done in mice.
