They Finally Scanned the Right Brains

Psychedelic science has been running hard for twenty years. For almost all of it, the volunteers were young.

That is not a conspiracy. It is just how trials get built. Younger bodies, fewer medications, cleaner data, fewer variables to control for. The result is a field with a great deal to say about a brain that is thirty and very little to say about a brain that is seventy.

This year that changed.

The first study built for older adults

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley opened a study registered as NCT06367738, known publicly as PLASTICITY. Its full title is a mouthful, “Investigating the Persisting Effects of a Single Dose of Psilocybin on Structural Plasticity in Healthy Older Adults”, but the important part is the last four words.

Eligibility runs from 60 to 85 years old. Participants are cognitively healthy. The registered intervention is a single dose of psilocybin between 1 and 30mg, given in a supervised research setting, with readings taken at baseline, one week out and one month out.

It is, as far as the public record shows, the first psychedelic neuroimaging study designed around older people rather than around whoever was easiest to recruit. The study is currently recruiting and has not reported results.

What they are actually measuring

The measurement list is unusually broad for a psychedelic trial, which is the tell that this is a study about the brain rather than about a symptom score.

Functional and diffusion MRI. Brain activity during memory encoding and retrieval. Visual perception. Vagus nerve activity. Wellbeing surveys at each checkpoint. As the Berkeley team has described it publicly, the goal is finding out whether those potentially beneficial brain changes can be measured in older adults at all.

Why the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex

Here is the reasoning underneath the study, and it is worth being precise about where the evidence comes from.

In animals, research suggests psilocybin increases the number of synaptic connections in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. That finding has been repeated across multiple animal studies. Those two regions happen to be among the ones that thin as we age.

So the overlap is the point. A compound that appears to build connections in animals, aimed at the regions that lose them in humans. Whether the same thing happens in a living human brain is exactly what has never been measured, and exactly what this study was built to look at.

What the real world data already shows

While the imaging question is still open, one large piece of real world evidence landed in August 2026. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University published an observational study in JAMA Network Open following 346 people through licensed Oregon psilocybin services between November 2024 and June 2026.

They checked in at one week, one month and three months. Around 90 percent of participants stayed with the study the whole way, which almost never happens in this kind of research.

At one month, 91.5 percent said they had benefited, and nearly two thirds ranked the session among the ten most meaningful experiences of their lives. At three months, improvements in wellbeing and life satisfaction were still present. The lead researcher noted that safety looked very similar to what has been seen in clinical settings.

Worth knowing about the design. It was observational with no control group, and participants were healthier overall than the people who typically enrol in clinical trials. That does not erase the result, but it does mean the numbers sit higher than they would in a general population.

The dose distinction that matters

Every study above used a large dose, taken once, with a facilitator in the room and most of a day set aside for it. That is a different activity from what we sell, and the distinction is worth keeping clear.

A microdose is a fraction of a clinical dose, taken on a schedule, while you get on with an ordinary day. It is not a supervised session. The research above does not transfer to it, and nobody has yet run a PLASTICITY sized imaging study on microdose amounts.

It is also worth pairing the optimism with the strongest counter-evidence. The largest placebo controlled microdosing study to date, Szigeti and colleagues’ self blinding citizen science trial published in eLife in 2021, found that microdosers improved on a range of measures, but so did the people taking placebo. The authors concluded that expectancy explained much of the effect. Any honest account of microdosing has to hold both of those things at once.

If you are curious where to start

Most people who come to microdosing later in life ask the same first question, which is how little they can reasonably take and still notice something. The answer is usually less than they expect.

Clarity Lite at 75mg is the gentlest place to begin, the same blend dialled down for anyone who would rather start below the middle of the road. Clarity at 125mg is the everyday option and our most reordered product, formulated with Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Chaga and ginger alongside the psilocybin. Wavy at 300mg is the one people tend to grow into once they know how they respond.

If you would rather be pointed somewhere than choose, the two minute quiz matches you to a starting dose, and the how it works page covers protocols and timing in more detail.

The honest summary

A study finally exists that was built for people over sixty. It is recruiting now, it has not reported anything yet, and when it does the result could go either way. The animal work that motivates it is real and repeated. The human question is genuinely open.

That is a less satisfying headline than most of what gets written about psychedelics. It also happens to be true, and if you have spent twenty years watching this field talk about everyone except you, it is probably the more interesting story anyway.
